In early January, the Besign team traveled to Hong Kong for a design excursion. From Central to the Kowloon Peninsula, we immersed ourselves in the city's slightly different design philosophy, deeply experiencing the unique design language and practices under the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.
The MTR's wayfinding system has long been regarded as a classic case of urban transport design. The clear path guidance, the clever combination of graphic symbols and bilingual signs, enable every passenger to quickly find their way. The MTR signage design emphasizes the balance between information transmission efficiency and user experience, with color, typography, and layout all showcasing a design philosophy of simplicity and precision. This extreme attention to detail is something every designer can learn from.
As an international city, Hong Kong's design context consistently reflects the integration of Eastern and Western cultures. Whether it's the neon signs on the streets or the information signs in public spaces, the choice of English fonts and typography design are meticulously considered. The simple sans-serif fonts and alignment methods not only enhance the readability of information but also reflect an international visual language. The widespread use of bilingual design in Hong Kong is both an expression of cultural inclusivity and an inspiration for how we can use design to express diverse cultures.
The M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District, with its avant-garde exhibition content and highly design-conscious space, perfectly interprets Hong Kong's support for artistic creation. Whether it's the open design of the building itself or the exhibited artworks, M+ continually explores the relationship between design and culture, society. When night falls, the museum shines in the nightscape of Victoria Harbour, becoming the best portrayal of the interplay between design and the city.
Design is a continuous driver of value in dynamic undercurrents. The design walk in Hong Kong provided us with countless inspirations and allowed us to more profoundly understand how design functions within different cultural contexts.
In 2025, Besign will explore more cities to unearth unique design philosophies and cultural landscapes. The significance of design is to transcend the boundaries of language and region, and our design journey will continue to leave new reflections and imprints in more places.
